We are now in our fifth week of spring start-ups and have successfully activated several hundred irrigation systems. We are pleased to report that most client systems are operating well and ready for the season. Despite a bitterly cold and frozen winter, repair and replacement needs have been consistent with previous years.

Older irrigation systems have experienced more issues than normal. We have repaired broken pipes, replaced sprinkler heads, and serviced zone valves. As systems age, piping can become brittle, and the freeze-thaw cycle during winter often causes damage to components.

Many clients are also making improvements to their landscapes by installing pools, patios, and new plantings. In addition to activating systems, we are making modifications and upgrades to accommodate these changes.

One of the most common concerns I am hearing from Rain Rich clients is the rising cost of water bills. Many homeowners are choosing to upgrade to Smart Controllers. We have been installing Smart Controllers for several years, and our clients have realized significant savings.

Smart Controllers connect to real-time weather data and automatically adjust watering schedules based on rainfall and temperature. They can also be monitored, reviewed, and programmed remotely from anywhere in the world using a Wi-Fi connection.

Although we had significant snowfall this winter and received 1.3 inches of rain this past Saturday, precipitation remains below average for April and for the year to date (down approximately 3 inches). It is important to monitor conditions and irrigate when we experience several dry days in a row, especially as lawns and landscapes emerge from dormancy and begin active growth.

This week’s forecast calls for clear and sunny conditions, with rain expected Thursday. Temperatures should remain near seasonal averages, with low evapotranspiration rates. If irrigation is needed, watering requirements should be minimal.

If you need assistance programming your controller, I recommend visiting Hunter Industries at http://www.hunterindustries.com. They offer manuals and programming instructions for all controller models. You can also search YouTube for quick one- and two-minute instructional videos specific to your controller.

A beautiful landscape is a valuable investment. The cost of maintaining a properly functioning sprinkler system is far less than the expense of replacing damaged lawns, shrubs, and trees.
