Selecting the right irrigation system is an important decision that can improve plant health, conserve water, and reduce long term maintenance costs. The best system for your property will depend on several factors, including the size of the area, the type of plants being watered, soil conditions, budget, and overall water-efficiency goals.

This guide outlines the key considerations and common irrigation options to help you choose the most effective system for your landscape or property.

  1. Asses Your Irrigation Needs

Before selecting a system, evaluate the specific requirements of your landscape.

Consider the Following:

  • Type of Landscape:

Determine what you are watering- lawn, flower beds, vegetable gardens, shrubs, and trees. Different plants and landscape features require different watering methods.

  • Size of Area:

Small gardens and planting beds often benefit from drip irrigation, while larger lawns will require sprinkler systems.

  • Soil type:

Sandy soil drains quickly and does not hold water. They require more frequent watering. Clay soils retain moisture longer and may need slower application rates to prevent runoff.

  • Climate and Sun Exposure:

Hot, dry, or windy conditions can increase evaporation and water demand. Sunny areas will require more frequent irrigation than shaded areas.

  • Slope and Drainage:

Sloped areas can cause runoff if water is applied to quickly.

  1. The Main Types of Irrigation Systems

There are several common irrigation systems available, each designed for different applications.

  • Sprinkler systems

Best for lawn areas and open landscapes.

Thes include rotary sprinklers for large lawn areas, sprays heads for smaller lawn areas and plants, and micro sprays for flowerpots. They distribute water over a wide area, simulating natural rainfall.

  • Drip Irrigation for planting beds and perimeter plantings. Drip Irrigation delivers water slowly and directly to the root zone through tubing and emitters. This is one of the most water-efficient irrigation methods because it minimizes evaporation, runoff, and overspray.
  • Smart Irrigation Systems

Smart Irrigation Controllers work thru your Wi-Fi to improve water efficiency by connection to weather controllers and automatically increasing or decreasing your watering. Greatly improves efficiency and water savings. Also allows you to manually control watering via an app on your smart phone.

  1. Prioritize Water Efficiency

Water efficiency should be a major factor when choosing an irrigation system. An efficient system can lower water bills, reduce waste, and support healthier plant growth.

  • Choose drip irrigation for perimeter plants and shrub beds.
  • Install a rain sensor to prevent over watering.
  • Choose a smart controller that works with real time weather data.
  1. Check Local Water Supply and Regulations

Before purchasing or installing a new irrigation system, review local requirements.

  • Where will the irrigation system draw its water?
  • Will it be from the water source that supplies the home?
  • Are there restrictions, codes, and requirements from your water district?
  1. Consider Installation and Maintenance
  • If its in the budget, choose better grade equipment to install. The best equipment will provide the longest life with the least amount of maintenance and repair/replacements. Every manufacturer produces irrigation equipment that is good, better, and best to meet different price points. The labor to install is usually the same for installing the best vs. the good. The best equipment lasts longer with less problems and over the life of the system is the greatest value.
  • There is yearly maintenance that is required to ensure the system is operating as it should. This includes spring start up and winterizing at the end of the year.
  • Water management. This is important. Who will manage the watering? As the season moves from spring to summer to fall the controller will have to be adjusted accordingly. Decreasing/increasing the run times and frequency of each zone as the weather changes.
  1. Choosing and Irrigation Contractor

The most important decision is working with a contractor that has your best interests including:

  • Licensed and Insured
  • Experience
  • A member of the Better Business Bureau
  • A member of the National Irrigation Association
  • A member of the Irrigation Association of New York
  • Provides a detailed written proposal.
  • Provides a written warranty.
  • Provides customer service and support.

Choosing a new irrigation system requires blanking performance, water efficiency, installation requirements, and budget. By carefully evaluating your landscape, understanding the available system types, and considering long-term maintenance costs, you can select an irrigation solution that supports healthy plant growth while conserving water and reducing waste.

A well-designed irrigation system is an investment that can improve the appearance and health of your landscape for years to come.

April is the ideal time to activate your sprinkler system, make the necessary repairs, and upgrades. While frequent spring rain usually means you won’t need to start watering right away it’s important to make sure your system is ready when the weather turns warmer and drier. Rain Rich is currently scheduling spring start-up appointments, so I recommend reserving your appointment now.

A healthy, attractive landscape is a valuable investment. Keeping your sprinkler system properly maintained is far more cost-effective than replacing damaged lawn, shrubs, or trees later in the season.
