Brown spots or brown areas in the lawn may be caused by several factors. The types of grasses we grow here on Long Island are cool weather plants and do not like or thrive well in very hot weather. If given a choice they would rather go dormant. We force them to stay green and growing by applying copious amounts of water and fertilizer. Unfortunately that may create other problems such as fungus, disease, and insects. Hot dry weather combined with high humidity is a recipe for fungus. If you have poor soil, poor drainage, improper pH, and compacted soil this will add to the problems.

During hot dry weather I recommend increasing you’re watering to 60 minutes/zone for rotary zones and 20 minutes/zone for spray heads. This is simple to do by programming your controller. Check your manufacturer website for instruction or visit youtube.com for video instruction. Check each zone manually for proper operation of coverage of each sprinkler head.

If brown areas persist or become larger then call a lawn care expert to diagnosis and treat.
