It’s one of the most frequent questions I am asked when we begin activating systems. Typically, April is a cool wet month on Long Island and there is no need to begin watering automatically. Lawn and plants are just beginning to emerge from dormancy and there is plenty of moisture in the soil to supply them with their watering requirements.
The month of May starts off cool and wet, however, by Mother’s Day the temperatures rise, and the weather improves. It is at this time you can begin to water automatically. Of course, the weather and rainfall are different year to year so you may have to water or not water depending upon the conditions.
One item that is new in the irrigation industry is the smart controller. The smart controller is a cloud-based irrigation controller that connects the programming through your Wi-Fi and to real time weather data. There is an APP that downloads onto your phone. If you have a Wi-Fi connection you can control the programming, water manually, and see reports. The cloud-based connection to weather data will automatically adjust the watering times of your irrigation zones. When the weather is hot it will increase the watering and when the temperature is cold it will decrease the watering. The controller also has a feature that is predictive. If rainfall is to occur it will prevent the system from operating. To learn more please visit www.hydrawise.com.
Currently, it is important to call and schedule your spring start up of your sprinkler system. After a very cold January and February, we find that many systems require repairs and replacements. The schedule is filling up quickly. Please do not delay.
A beautiful landscape is a valuable investment and the cost to maintain a sprinkler system that sustains a healthy landscape is far less expensive than replacing lawn, shrubs, and trees.
