Evapotranspiration, commonly called ET, is the transference of moisture from the earth to the atmosphere. Evaporation is the movement of water from the soil to the atmosphere. Transpiration is the movement of water through a plant to the atmosphere. ET is the combined flow.
Why is it important to know ET? Knowing ET allows for more precise watering. Water too little and turf and plants suffer. Water too much and you may drown your landscape or create conditions that cause disease. Typically Long Island ET rate is 0.15”/day or 1”-2” per week. That is the amount we want to apply through irrigation. Now, with the availability of Smart Controllers scheduling the correct amount has become much easier and simpler. Smart Controllers work with software that is in the cloud.
The software and the programming connect to real time weather data and automatically adjusts watering based upon temperature, wind, humidity, and ET. Smart Controllers are a huge improvement in managing water and a healthy landscape. Existing systems can be easily upgraded.
