During this current hot spell on Long Island it is best to increase the run times of your zones or stations. Hot dry weather that we have been experiencing here on Long Island can cause 1- 2” of water to evaporate from soil and plants. Just as we need to keep hydrated so does your landscape. The goal is to replace the water that is lost due to evaporation or with plants – evapotranspiration.

For Long Island, we need to irrigate 1-2” per week during the summer. I would recommend that you water for one hour for rotary sprinklers in full sun a minimum of three times per week. For a rotary sprinklers in the shade a minimum of 30 minutes run time three times per week. For spray heads in full sun a run time 15 minutes three times per week. For spray heads in shade a minimum of 5 minutes three time per week.

Drip Irrigation is a great way to irrigate and you can water anytime of the day.  The slow trickle watering is great for perimeter plantings and gardens with very little of the water lost due to evaporation, wind, and run off. Drip irrigation run time works well for 30 minutes per zone every other day.

Soil conditions will determine if you need to water more or less than above guidelines. Sandy soils do not hold moisture and will require more watering and more frequently. Some properties will require everyday watering. Clay soils hold moisture and therefore plants and lawns will require less water less frequently.

If it is super-hot and looks like your landscape is burning up then run an additional cycle during the day. The cool water will reduce stress in the plants while providing additional water.

For those of you that live in Nassau County, regulations exist that only allow you to water on odd or even days of the month based on your house number. Even numbered homes water on even days of the month and odd numbered homes on odd days of the month.

Sprinkler Systems work best if they begin operation early in the morning. Any time after 2 am works best. This is due to the availability of good water pressure and volume from your water supplier. If possible avoid watering at night as warm temperatures and high humidity combined with irrigation may contribute to fungus problems.

Every property is different, every landscape is different and therefore careful monitoring is important. I recommend you check your sprinkler system one time per week. Run each zone manually for a few minutes each and visibly observe your sprinkler system operation. Make sure all your sprinkler heads are operating properly and covering all your lawn and plants. If you would like to improve your irrigation system, create efficiency, and water savings, then consider upgrading to a smart controller. Smart controllers allow you to monitor your systems operation, watering programs, make changes, and receive reports, from anywhere in the world all from your smart phone or other devices. This is truly a leap forward in our industry and will keep your landscape healthy and happy!
