Last week we saw and heard on the news the terrible ordeal that the citizens in Texas were suffering due to the unusual cold weather. Unfortunately many homes and commercial buildings were damaged due to frozen pipes and flooding. Much of the damage could have been reduced if owners knew where their main water supply valve was located and were able to shut it off.
The main water supply valve is a normally opened valve that supplies water to the entire house. Ordinarily, you do not need access to this valve unless you are having plumbing work done, modifying your home, or in an emergency. Many clients I speak to do not know where this valve is located. It’s important to know its location and to make sure it works properly. What would you do if you had a water leak?
Once you know its location it is necessary to test to make sure the valve will close 100%. With increased age there is always the possibility it may not work. For many homeowners this valve has not been touched in years. The valve can be worn, stuck in the open position, or have debris inside preventing it from closing. The simplest way to do this is to shut the valve off and open a few faucets in your home. If the water will not stop running then it’s time to call a plumber and have it replaced. Place a tag on the valve to identify it, MAIN WATER SUPPLY VALVE, and make everyone in the home aware of its location and how to shut it off. Take a few minutes to follow these instructions to save yourself some heartache and money.
The old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” really applies here.
