At Rain Rich, we have been designing and installing landscape lighting for over 20 years on Long Island. We work with many different manufacturers and have seen many changes recently, especially with the introduction of LED’s.

Many of our clients are not familiar with LED’s and the benefits they provide. I listed a few below for better understanding and use for in your home and landscape.

LED is abbreviated for Light Emitting Diode. They are an electronic device for producing bright white light. They primarily work by converting AC electric to direct current and passing through a microchip into diodes that produce light.

Traditional incandescent bulbs have a filament that use electricity to heat up and produce light. Incandescent bulbs lose most of their energy to heat making them very inefficient. LED’s use 10% -20% of the energy compared to incandescent bulbs.

LED’s are a sealed unit protected from the weather including moisture, humidity, temperature changes, dust, pollen, and insects.

LED’s are manufactured to fit most existing landscape lighting fixtures. They emit less UV light which attracts fewer insects.

Because LED’s use much less energy to produce light, we now measure light in lumens. A traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces approximately 800 lumens. An LED can produce the same number of lumens using only 6 watts.

LED’s can be used in many different configurations producing many distinct kinds of light including assorted colors.

LED’s last many hours and are rated over 20,000 hours of use resulting in less maintenance and replacement.

LED’s constructed for landscape lighting are constructed very differently than LED’s for inside the home. They are robust and built for all the challenges that occur in the environment.

They work great for landscapes, an excellent proven choice for lighting pathways, driveways, walkways, patios, trees, and shrubs.
