Many clients ask when should they winterize their sprinkler system? It’s a frequently asked questions and for most the answer is between now and Thanksgiving. If you have an existing landscape and turf then now is a good time. If you have new landscaping and a new lawn or renovated lawn and you need to water then a few more weeks is okay. However, by November 1 the days are short, the nights are cool, and there is very little growing of plant material. Also, the soil loses very little moisture to evaporation therefore no need to keep watering.
It’s really important that you have your irrigation system winterized as water in the sprinkler equipment e.g. sprinkler heads, pipe, fittings, and backflow device can freeze. When water freezes it expands and is powerful enough to split your equipment. Winterizing your system now will prevent costly repairs the following spring.
The best way to prevent damage is to purge your system of water. To purge your system of water it is important to close the main sprinkler supply valve and push the water out through the sprinkler heads with compressed air. Rain Rich Sprinklers has all the proper equipment and trained technicians to provide this important service. For over 38 years Rain Rich has winterized thousands of sprinkler systems with 100% success.
